Much better than expected
Bought this jacket to replace a Millet soft shell I had for 7 years. I'm 5'9", 190 and the Large was the right fit. I wanted something warmer than a soft shell (eg patagonia ascentionist) with a hood while avoiding the bulkiness of a full ski parka. This jacket has exceeded expectations. It is insulated so I can't wear it if the temp is above 40 due to the Polartec insulation on the core and it can be layered very easliy - I use a Patagonia R1 for days under freezing and a NF polortec 300 fleece for days under 15F. Fortunately on the east coast, you don't get to many ski days above 30F so this jacket will succeed 90% of the time. Some flaws - the pocket system is weak so if you are carrying a phone or ipod, you are likely to be using the inside check pocket instead of a single zip pocket on the chest like the Millet, MH or NF in the same price point.

Amazingly breathable, yet windproof and warm jacket. The fit is fairly athletic, so not a whole lot of room for layering bulky insulation underneath, but for all but the chilliest days, this is a cozy shelter. There is very little lift in the body when reaching overhead, and overall mobility is excellent. The jacket is also extremely light and thus is not in any way restricting when scrambling, skiing, hiking etc... I cannot comment on the long-term durability of the jacket as I have only had it a relatively short time, but I am optimistic about the Polartec material as thus far, it seems very tough, shrugging off tree branches, thorns and the like easily. The hood, being designed for a helmet, is absurdly large for a bare head, which can be irritating if it starts to rain anywhere one finds oneself without a helmet (which I personally find is most of the time). That's about the only complaint tho!

I have spent the last year on a quest for the best softshell. TNF, Mtn Hardwear, Marmot, Patagonia, Outdoor Research, and Arcteryx. I've tried probably 15 jackets. The Gamma SV is definitely the best of the bunch. The fleece lining keeps you warm, the polartec powershield is tough and yet stretchy. Drop tail in the back. Hip length in front. Collar detached from the hood. Get the jacket in your size and it will fit. I'm 5'10" 170lbs. Medium is perfect. Buy this jacket!!!
