A near miss
In looking for the ever-elusive Perfect Boot I decided to try Keen. I have a pair of their water sandals which are very comfy, so I tried the Shasta, Targhee and Oregon for an overview. Of the three, the Shasta was the lightest, truest to size (I need at least 1/2 size up in the other 2), most flexible and least-cushioned in the footbed. I tried them with mid-weight hiking socks and with my usual green arch supports. They were OK, but I was starting to get some discomfort at the pressure points on the balls of my feet after a while. This problem might have taken care of itself as I broke the shoes in and they molded a bit to my feet--my sandals definitely fit better the longer I wore them. All in all though, I like the cush in the Targhees a little more. A couple of observations: The tongue of the boot is a little too short and is not gusseted to keep out trail debris. Also, if this matters to you, the tread is not very deep, so this boot is not suitable for all surfaces.
