Patagonia Men's Das Parka

Clinging to the windswept north face of Forbidden Peak your mind meanders to images of Alaska, the Alps, even the Karakoram. Sometimes the North Cascades feels like those far away ranges that demand the warmth and function of the Patagonia Das Parka. This definitive belay parka delivers exactly what the serious storm-battling alpinist needs: how did I get here idiot-proof warmth. Cold, wet and admittedly a little scared, this is no way to traverse life, but fortunately the Das Parka takes some of the edge off. Simply put its saving your butt by sheding snow, blocking the wind, and offering the best-in-class, high-loft hollow-fiber PrimaLoft One (170-g) insulation that stays warm, even when wet. Its light yet tough polyester quad-ripstop shell fabric that is treated with a Deluge DWR (durable water repellent) finish, is reinforced at the shoulders, elbows and hips for exceptional abrasion resistance as you worm around in your compromised position. Snugging up its adjustable, helmet-compatible hood and tall collar to protect your face, your partner finally anchors the move that releases you from the biter bite of the belay ledge. Warming your digits in the insulated handwarmer pockets, your reach into the zippered chest pocket to retrieve your drying gloves, and check that the inside mesh pockets and 2-way zip are secure before launching your final attack. Sometimes extraordinary circumstances require the superior performance of the Patagonia Das Parka.

Patagonia Das Parka
I wanted a jacket that was warm but lightweight, and that is exactly what I got in the Das Parka. The quality of construction is typical Patagonia excellence. I like to think of this jacket as a piece of art that you can wear, and I may live in it until spring. Additionally, it is supposed to shed light rain (haven't tried it in a downpour yet), and I got it on sale. I chose the Deep Mango color for the visibility factor. My main concern is that a ramble through blackberry brambles might tear it to shreds. Also, the retail cost is not inconsequential.

Impressed so far
I've only had my DAS parka for a few days but have been out in the cold with it and I'd like to say a few things about it: 1) I'm 5'9" and about 175 lbs. I ordered the medium and wow is it huge on me. Very unexpected even though I knew they are oversized. I considered returning it for the small but decided to keep it as the drawcord at the bottom pulls tight enough to keep it from hanging loosely and letting warm air out. It is sized just right to throw on over a big fleece, a goretex AND it still doesn't look too silly all by itself over a Tshirt. 2) The quality of construction seems immpecible, something I expect from Patagonia being a pretty loyal user for almost 20 years. 3) It is warm but not crazy warm like my North Face Himilayan Parka. I'd say its about as warm as my Patagonia down hoodie (which is very thin and light) but not as warm as a medium to thick down jacket. That said I live in B.C. where winters are cold and wet and I've seen what a combination of sweat and heavy wet snow does to down - renders it useless in minutues....that's why I bought the DAS. I've already found that at 0 celcius (32F) that its a bit cold to wear with just a shirt underneath. Throw a fleece on underneath and it feels so much warmer. 4) The hood is the best part. It is simply amazing. I'll never buy another jacket again without a hood. The hood is so large that your head dissapears into is silky warmth. I've only had my DAS for a week but I love it already and will be wearing it faithfully for the next few years I am sure. This Patagonia piece is a classic and I hope they always sell it so that in 10 years when this one is worn out I can get another.

Best synthetic insulation for cold weather
This jacket is great for anything in cold weather, from climbing to belaying to bivouacking. It's roomy enough to accommodate several layers of clothing underneath. Stuff sack helps compress it to a reasonable size for packing. It's also easy to wash and dry. If I had to buy another heavy-duty parka, I wouldn't hesitate to get another DAS.
