Description
- The Clear Creek Ranger District includes much of the Clear Creek drainage from Idaho Springs, west to the Eisenhower Tunnel and the Continental Divide. It includes many of the high peaks of the Front Range such as Mount Evans, Gray's Peak and Torrey's Peak. Loveland and Berthoud Pass Ski Areas both lie along the Continental Divide. Mount Evans Road leads to the summit of Mount Evans at over 14,000 feet. The Mount Evans Wilderness Area is located to the south of Idaho Springs.
Recreation - In the summer months, the district provides opportunities for camping, backpacking, hiking, fishing, four-wheel driving and sightseeing. Hunting is a popular activity in the autumn months. The winter brings lots of snow particularly to the high elevations and opportunities for downhill and cross-country skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and snowmobiling. Climate - Elevations on the district range from about 7,000 feet on the east end of the district, to over 14,000 feet along the Continental Divide. The climate in the area varies greatly with the elevation. The weather is generally much warmer and drier at the lower elevations. For summer, expect warm days and cool to freezing nights, particularly in the high country. Much of the highest elevations remain inaccessible until early or mid-July. Be prepared for both warm and chilly weather. Afternoon thunderstorms are common from mid-July through August. Although skies are often sunny, winter temperatures can be very cold. Abundant snow in the higher elevations supports many winter activities. Lower elevations normally hold only intermittent snow through the winter. Location -
The Clear Creek Ranger District is located on the east side of the Continental Divide, just west of Denver in the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests. The district surrounds the towns of Idaho Springs, Central City and Georgetown.
