Description
- This area provides access to some remote backcountry that promises interesting geological, historical and cultural sites. Reminders of ancient life that existed in the area, both reptilian and Homo sapiens, pervade the grassland. Solitude is guaranteed in most areas of Comanche National Grassland.
Recreation - Several areas of the grassland are open for various recreational uses. Hiking, mountain biking, educational activities, viewing historical sites, scenic driving, horseback riding and picnicking are among the recreation opportunities to be enjoyed in the region. Climate - The climate here is semi arid. The weather is extreme. Fall and Spring are the best times to visit the region, because of mild temperatures. Summer is hot with temperatures reaching above 100 degrees on most days. The semi arid climate prevents large shade trees from growing, so expect to be exposed to the sun during your entire trip. Winter usually means snow and cold temperatures, because of the high elevations (4,300 feet). Be prepared for the extreme climate in the region with layers of clothing, plenty of water and sun protection. Location -
The grasslands are located in the southeastern corner of Colorado. The grasslands are split into two separate areas. The northern area is located approximately 8 miles south of La Junta. Most of the area is west of State Highway 109 and east of State Highway 10. The Purgatory River flows through the Picket Wire Canyonlands of this region. The southern area of Comanche National Grasslands lies south of Springfield very close to the Oklahoma border. This area can be accessed from U.S. Highways 160 and 287/385.
