General Information

Description - The Pinedale Ranger District is dominated by the Wind River Range, one of the most beautiful ranges in the Rocky Mountains and home to Wyoming's highest mountain, Gannet Peak, at 13,804. Most of the District is designated Wilderness within the 428,000 acre Bridger Wilderness and a portion of the Gros Ventre Wilderness. A number of large lakes including New Fork, Willow, Freemont, Half Moon, Burnt, and Boulder Lakes stretch along the west side of the Wind River Range, many offering camping and boating opportunities. Hundreds of small lakes are scattered throughout the scenic District. The headwaters of the Green River as well as many smaller streams are found on the Pinedale District.

Recreation - The numerous lakes and the vast wildernesses on the Pinedale District provide a wealth of outdoor recreation opportunities away from the larger numbers of tourists further north in the Yellowstone and Jackson Hole area. The most popular activities on the disrict include camping in campgrounds and dispersed areas, hiking, backpacking, horseback riding, boating, fishing, sightseeing, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing.

Climate - As throughout the Rocky Mountains, the climate varies drastically depending on elevation. Summers generally offer warm clear days with cool nights. Afternoon thunderstorms are often a possibility in the summer. In the winter, sunshine, with heavy of snow in the higher elevations, are ideal for winter activities. Harsh weather - including wind, cold, and snow - is possible throughout the winter and even throughout the year, in the highest elevations.

Location - The Pinedale Ranger District is located at the southeast end of the Bridger-Teton National Forest in western Wyoming. The District lies along the west slope of the Wind River Range and the Continental Divide, east of Pinedale, Wyoming. The District office is in Pinedale, which can be reached via Highway 191 south from Jackson (80 miles), or Highway 191 north from Rock Springs (100 miles).
