Description
- The White Mountain Ranger District encompasses the area surrounding the town of Bishop and offers access into the John Muir Wilderness Area and the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Scenic Byway. Popular recreation areas include the Sabrina and Rock Creek Lakes where boat launches, trailer spaces, and pack stations are all maintained by the Ranger District. Popular backpacker access points include South Lake and Big Pine Creek, both located west of the town of Big Pine.
Recreation - Recreational opportunities in this district include backpacking, stock packing, fishing, and boating. Climate - Deep snow often covers the middle elevations from December to May, but subzero temperatures are rare. Precipitation falls mostly between January and mid-May, but thunderstorms, rain and even snow can occur at any time of year. Temperatures vary with elevation. In the summer, daytime temperatures often exceed 100 degrees F in the foothills, but seldom exceed 90 degrees at higher elevations. Even in the summer, backpackers in the high country can encounter nighttime temperatures in the low 30's, and occasionally even in the 20's. In any season, it is wise to bring clothing that can be "layered". Always include some kind of rain gear. Location -
The White Mountain Ranger District includes the area on all sides of the town of Bishop. The Sierra National Forest lies to the west and Kings Canyon to the south. US 395 runs through the district from north to south.
