Description
- The Beckwourth Ranger District has several reservoirs and lakes that provide many opportunities for recreation. The Lake Davis Area and the Frenchman Lake are two of these areas. The Gold Lake Area also provides activities.
Recreation - The Beckwourth Ranger District in the Plumas National Forest offers recreationists a wide variety of outdoor experiences including: camping, picnicking, fishing, water skiing, swimming, boating, hunting, hiking, sightseeing, and winter sports such as snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. Climate - The Plumas generally experiences warm, dry summers and cold, wet winters. Weather can change rapidly during all seasons of the year. Elevation plays a major role in temperature and precipitation. This precipitation falls mainly from October through April. At higher elevations, it comes mostly in the form of snow. Clouds can build up during the summer to produce thunderstorm activity. It is wise to pack for any season with clothing that can be "layered", ready to peel off or add on as the thermometer dictates. The Beckwourth Ranger District encompasses the eastern end of the Plumas National Forest in Northern California. The southern border of this District adjoins the Tahoe National Forest. The district lies around the towns of Portola and Doyle, with State Highway 70 and US Highway 395 leading through the area.
