Description - The Mount Adams Ranger District covers the southern portion of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest and includes the Mt. Adams, Indian Heaven and Trapper Creek Wildernesses. It also includes the Big Lava Bed, an unusual lava field which originated from a crater now 500 feet deep, and the Wind River Experimental Forest.
Attractions
- Mt. Adams Ranger District offers campgrounds, horse camps and over 100 trails for visitors to enjoy. Mount Adams, which borders the Yakima Indian Reservation, gives hikers spectacular views of its glaciers, tumbling streams, open alpine forests and wildflowers scattered among lava flows and rimrocks.
Recreation - There are numerous activities including hiking, biking, backpacking, camping, horseback riding, motorcycle riding, wildlife viewing, fishing, and cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling in the winter at the Upper Wind River Winter Sports Area. Climate - Climate on the Gifford Pinchot changes drastically with elevation. The area receives a high amount of precipitation. Much of the precipitation comes from October to April in the form of rain at the low elevations and as wet heavy snow in the higher elevations. Deep winter snowpacks accumulate in the high elevations. Location -
The Mount Adams Ranger District covers the southern portion of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. The District can be accessed from the south via State Hwy. 14 on Forest Road 30, from the east on State Hwy. 141, and from the east on National Forest Hwy. 90.
