Mount Jefferson Wilderness- Mount Jefferson Wilderness Area is located in the northeastern region of the Willamette National Forest at an elevation of 3,000- 10,497 feet. This wilderness area is 111,177 acres in size and offers hiking, horseback riding, camping and fishing,
Opal Creek Wilderness- Opal Creek Wilderness Area is located in the northwestern region of the Willamette Forest at an elevation of 1,600 - 4,600 feet. This wilderness area is 20,266 acres in size and offers hiking, horseback riding, camping, fishing and picnicking.

General Information

Description - The Detroit Ranger District has 16 established campgrounds from which to enjoy during your visit. These campground access many of over 17 trails that explore this area. These campgrounds also provide access to some of the snow parks located in this District. At these snow parks you can snowshoe, cross-country ski and go snowmobiling. For picnicking and other day use activities there are 4 areas to enjoy grilling, picnicking, etc.

Attractions - For camping there is Riverside Campground, Santiam Flats Campground, Shady Grove Campground, Southshore Campground and Whispering Falls Campground.

For picnicking and other day use activities there are the Cove Creek Day Use Area, the Detroit Flats Day Use Area, the Hoover Day Use Area and the Southshore Day Use Area.

For hiking there is the Henline Mountain Trail, Independence Rock Trail, Jawbone Flats Trail and Opal Creek Trail.

Sites to see are Independence Rock, Henline Mountain, Bachelor mountain, Coffin Lookout, Dome Rock and South Breitenbush Gorge.

For group camping there is the Cove Creek Group Site and the Hoover Group Site.

The Santiam Rivers Scenic Byway is a great way to view the surrounding area and much of the Willamette National Forest.

For snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing there is the McCoy Creek Snowmobiling Area.

Recreation - This Ranger District offers, hiking, mountain biking, viewing wildlife and scenery, picnicking, camping and scenic byways

Climate - Elevations on the Forest range from about 1,500 feet above sea level to 10,495 feet at the snowcapped top of Mt. Jefferson, Oregon's second highest peak. Climate on the Willamette changes with elevation. The area receives a high amount of precipitation. Much of the precipitation comes from October to April in the form of rain at the low elevations and as wet heavy snow in the higher elevations. Although snow is possible in the lowest elevations, it is infrequent. Late spring, summer and early autumn tend to bring clear, sunny days with moderate temperatures.

Location - The Detroit Ranger Station is located in the northern region of the Willamette National Forest. The town of Salem is located approximately 30 miles to the west.

Report: Hunting the Big meadows area was great. Did not see many people. Came across a bear several elk. Did shoot a nice buck in the area. recomend this area to all hunters.
