General Information

Description - The Clinch Ranger District is home to the High Knob Recreation Area which boosts a lookout tower putting visitors at 4,160 feet above sea level. The area is dotted with circa 1930s CCC structures still in use today. One of the District's most fascinating attributes is the Guest River Gorge Trail that follows an old railroad route passing a 400-foot gorge of ancient sandstone.

Recreation - Hungry Mother State Park is near Marion, Virginia and offers overnight accommodations and an award-winning restaurant. The area is dotted with bed and breakfasts, museums, shopping and cultural activities and festivals.

Climate - Virginia generally has mild winters and warm humid summers. The mountainous Blue Ridge area has cold winter months with temperatures ranging from 36 degrees Fahrenheit (2 degrees Celsius) and dropping below 32 degrees Fahrenheit (0 Celsius). The state's summer temperatures have little variation. The summer mountainous Blue Ridge temperatures range from below 74 degrees Fahrenheit (23 Celsius) to 78 degrees Fahrenheit (26 Celsius).

Location - The Clinch Ranger District is located in southwestern Virginia close to Marion.

Blue Ridge Highlands Travel Region - The Blue Ridge Highlands includes seven State Parks, a National Forest, a natural area preserve, two scenic byways and access to the Appalachian Trail.
Bristol / Abingdon / Marion Area - This is a beautiful mountainous area and was much traveled by pioneers during the 1800's. Bristol is created with being the birth place of country music. Folk arts and crafts are a main attraction.
