Description - Route 17 in the Rangeley Lakes region lies in the western mountains of the State of Maine. The Appalachian Trail crosses the northwestern portion of this designated Scenic Byway. The area has extraordinary scenic quality with a number of elevated, panoramic viewsheds, available to visitors with the use of scenic turnouts along the corridor. The area is a year-round recreational destination as well as a major tourist route.

Beginning about 3.65 miles northerly of U.S. Route 2 in Mexico and extending northerly on State Route 17 through the towns and/or townships of Mexico, Roxbury, Byron, Township D, Rangely Plantation and Rangely to the junction of State Routes 17 and 4 in Oquossoc.
