Description - This byway is unique because it runs along New Hampshire's only coastline. It consequently escorts you through brilliant panoramas of the Atlantic Ocean and its sandy beaches. It also showcases dozens of fascinating historic sites and scenic areas. For example, Portsmouth's greatness as one of the nation's first grand port cities is illustrated in its exceptional late 18th/early 19th-century architecture.

The foremost landmark of the community is the historic Wentworth-By-the-Sea Hotel, which housed both delegations during the signing of the Russo-Japanese Peace Treaty at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in 1905.

Hampton Beach is the most popular seasonal resort community in the region. During the summer months, visitors flock to this area to enjoy sandy beaches, cultural events, and lively entertainment.

Attractions - The Coastal Byway is known for it's Cultural, Historical, Natural, Recreational and Scenic Attractions.

Directions from : On the northern end of the byway, the route starts in historic Portsmouth. From here, you can either swing directly east for a short side loop on Route 1B or continue south on Route 1A. In any case, 1A and 1B reconvene at the city of Rye.

The route continues south along the coast for about 15 miles and ends just past the city of Seabrook Beach. Specifically, it ends when it hits route 286.
