Description - This 21-mile long route is almost overloaded with history. To begin with, the city of Hampton was settled in 1638; and the settlement of the other towns on the route followed close behind. The resultant architecture is captivating.

The city of Exeter was the state's capital during the War of Independence and accommodates the American Independence Museum and the Phillips Exeter Academy. There are certainly also quite a lot of very early residences, (such as the Gilman Garrison,) that are open to visit in the summer.

Attractions - The American Independence Byway is known for it's Historical Attractions.

Directions from : A short tail of road starts this route on its eastern end; the remainder of the route is a huge circle that reunites with the tail at the byway's end. The tail is route 101E that begins at the coast, just north of the city of Hampton Beach.

• About 2 miles of going west on 101E, you turn north on SR 27 into Hampton.

• After Hampton, continue on SR 27 because it swings you northwest toward Exeter.

• SR 108 takes you south out of Exeter.

• When you get the opportunity, hook eastward onto SR 150 to get to Kensington.

• Soon after Kensington, you will join SR 84 to come to Hampton Falls.

• US 1 brings you northward out of Hampton Falls and to the end of the byway, when it hits 101E.
