Description - This New England rural area remains unspoiled by over-development. You can enjoy uninterrupted mountain and river views, wetlands, woodlands, and charming 18th- and 19th-century buildings along the way. You can also enjoy just about anything "outdoorsy" under these towering granite cliffs and soaring mountains. Writers Nathaniel Hawthorne (The Scarlet Letter) and Reverend Thomas Starr King loved this area. They captured readers' imaginations with tales of the White Mountains. The railroad largely shaped this area in the modern sense. Directly related to the railroad, the lumber industry spurred the development of many towns in the region, such as Bartlett, Conway Village, and North Conway. Frankenstein Trestle, which supports railroad tracks below the cliff in Crawford Notch, still makes observers gasp.
