Description - This byway meanders across the Iowa River Valley in east central Iowa. It encompasses the historic Amana Colonies that are known today for their fine craftsmanship and excellent German-style restaurants. These seven villages formed a communal society in the 1850's, most of the settlers being members of the same religious sect from Germany. The sect was known as the Community of True Inspiration and was one of the most successful communal societies in history. Now, the Amana Colonies exhibit remnants of a fascinating cultural heritage.

Location -
Directions from : The Iowa Valley Scenic Byway takes travelers through three counties in east central Iowa. Driving the Byway The byways begins at Tama County Road T-47 off U.S. 30 several miles east of Le Grand. Once the route reaches the community of Montour, take county road E-49. E-49 leads to Tama where the route continues on E-64. After the community of Haven, the route will run on county road V-18 until the community of Chelsea. From Chelsea, follow E-66 to the community of Belle Plaine. At Belle Blaine, take SR-21. Continue on SR-21 until an intersection with SR-212. At the community of Marengo, take V-66. From V-66, turn onto F-15. F-15 will lead travelers to the Amana Colonies, the first being West Amana. Continue through High Amana, Middle Amana, and Amana on SR 220. At Amana, take Highway 151 south to Homestead. At Homestead, follow Highway 6 past South Amana and back to Marengo where the byway ends.
