Description - Located in the Sierra Nevada mountains, Lake Tahoe's beautiful, sapphire-blue waters straddle the California-Nevada state line. The lake's elevation averages 6,225 ft, and surrounding peaks reach heights of up to 10,880 ft. World-renowned for its clear water, Lake Tahoe has been designated an Outstanding Natural Resources Water.

- Over 70 percent of the land surrounding Lake Tahoe is managed by the U.S. Forest Service, Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU). This includes popular areas such as Mount Tallac, the Tallac Historic Site, Angora Lookout, Eagle Falls, Stateline Lookout, Desolation Wilderness, Mount Rose Wilderness, Granite Chief Wilderness, Fallen Leaf Lake, and many of the smaller lakes surrounding Lake Tahoe. Many of the campgrounds, trails and ski areas around Lake Tahoe are also found on Forest Service land. Lake Tahoe is surrounded by numerous California and Nevada state parks. Kings Beach, Burton Creek, Sugar Pine Point, DL Bliss, Emerald Bay and Washoe Meadows state parks are located on the California side. Lake Tahoe State Park is located on the Nevada side of the lake. Many of the state parks include campgrounds, fishing areas, trails, beaches, picnic areas, cross-country ski trails, interpretive sites and more.
Recreation - The Lake Tahoe Region offers outstanding outdoor recreation opportunities. Some of the most popular summer activities include hiking, backpacking, camping, fishing, boating, swimming, mountain biking, horseback riding, rafting, climbing, and viewing the scenery. Winter brings plenty of snow and outstanding winter recreation opportunities including downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. Climate - Changeable weather conditions are common in the Lake Tahoe Basin throughout the year. Winter storms may occur from September through June, with accumulating snow on mountain passes causing delays and travel restrictions. Sunny, summer skies may cloud over quickly with
thundershowers, catching some people by surprise. Weather may also vary or change rapidly from lake-level (6,225 ft) to mountain peaks (10,880 ft). Location -
The Lake Tahoe Region is located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, along the California-Nevada border. I-80 runs to the north of the lake and US Highway 50 runs along the south and east shore. Carson City and Reno, Nevada are located just northeast of Lake Tahoe.
