Bear Valley Cross Country

Attractions - The scenic resort offers superb terrain for cross-country skiers of all abilities, including beginners, as well as snowshoeing, sledding, telemark and backcountry skiing. Bear Valley Lodge is the hub the quaint walking village of Bear Valley. It is a great place to stay, drop in for a drink or dine. All this is walking distance from the cross country trails. The downhill slopes of Bear Valley are just 3 miles away.

Climate - The High Sierra generally experiences mild to warm, dry summers and cold, snowy and wet winters. Weather can change rapidly during all seasons of the year. Elevation plays a major role in temperature and precipitation. This precipitation falls mainly from October through April. At higher elevations, it comes mostly in the form of snow. A snowpack from 5-10 feet or more is usually present from December to May at elevations above 6,500 feet. Winter temperatures below zero and summer temperatures above 100 degrees indicate the normal seasonal spread. Clouds can build up during the summer to produce spectacular thunderstorm activity. It is wise to pack for any season with clothing that can be "layered", ready to peel off or add on as the thermometer dictates. Always include some kind of rain gear.

Location - Bear Valley Cross Country Ski Area is located between Tahoe and Yosemite on all-weather Highway 4, about 140 miles east of San Francisco.

From the Bay Area: Take 580 east to 205 east to 120 east to 99 north to 4 east and continue to Bear Valley.

From the Central Valley: Take 99 north to 4 east and continue to Bear Valley.
