Description - In Los Angeles County, wild places exist in the middle of a major metropolitan area. The state park sites in this county cover mountains and high-desert to beaches.

Attractions - This area is rich in natural and cultural significance. The area includes Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve, which is transformed from a parched, high-desert landscape to fields of golden poppies and wildflowers by the spring rains. Topanga State Park covers more than 11,000 acres of the rugged Santa Monica Mountains. Several state beaches lie along the coast near Malibu.

Recreation - Activities at the state parks sites in this region include: hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, camping, picnicking, fishing, boating, surfing, windsurfing and viewing the mountain and coastal scenery.

Climate - A warm, dry Mediterranean climate prevails over Southern California - inland it is hot in the summer, mild in the winter. Coastal areas have a more moderate climate with frequent fog in the summer. Most of the precipitation comes as rain during the winter months. The best seasons to visit are spring and fall but with the mild climate, outdoor recreation opportunities are enjoyable year-round.

Location - The Los Angeles County surrounds the city of Los Angeles, along the coast of southern California and reaches inland to Lancaster.
