General Information

Description - Pitkin County Open Space manages open space, parks and trails in Pitkin County and the Aspen area. These facilities include 30 parks, over 1,300 acres of vast open space, 22 miles of pedestrian/bike trails and over 55 miles of ross country/nordic trails. Some of the most popular parks include; The John Denver Sanctuary, Koch Park, Wagner Park and the Rio Grand Park. Popular Open Space parcels for quiet recreation include; Smuggler Open Space, Sky Mountain Park and North Star Nature Preserve which is jointly managed by Pitkin County Open Space and The Nature Conservancy.

Activities include; biking, hiking, walking, golfing, cross-county skiing, picnicking and playgrounds.

Climate - Summer high temperatures extend into the 70's and mid 80s, with cool evenings that can often dip into the 30s. Winter lows occasionally dip to minus 30 degrees, though daytime temperatures are often in the 20s to 30s. The relative humidity is quite low throughout the year. Much of the area and its recreation facilities lie at higher elevations where significantly lower temperatures and more precipitation can be expected. Afternoon summer thunderstorms are common. Snow is possible at any time of year in the highest elevations. The high elevation roads and trails are often not clear of snow until mid-July.

Location - Pitkin County Open Space consists of many plots and trails in and around Aspen, Colorado. The department office is located at 585 Cemetery Lane, Aspen, Colorado.
