Twin Lakes from the Moache Fishing Site

Description - Nestled below Independence Pass, the Twin Lakes area offers spectacular mountain scenery. The lakes, formed by glacial activity, were enlarged to provide water storage for the ever-thirsty urban areas along Colorado's Front Range. Twin Lakes covers 1,700 surface acres and has a maximum depth of 70 feet. The waters are open to boaters and regulated by state boating laws. The waters are generally cold so if you're planning to water ski bring a wet suit.
Attractions
- Two boat ramps, one on the eastern side of the lakes and one on the western side, provide access to Twin Lakes Reservoir. There are five Forest Service Campgrounds in the Twin Lakes area: Dexter, Lakeview, Parry Peak, Twin Peaks and White Star. Campsites at Dexter, Parry Peak and Twin Peaks Campgrounds are first come, first serve. Lakeview and White Star Campgrounds have a combination of first come-first serve sites as well as sites by reservation. Reservations for individual sites are available at White Star and Lakeview Campgrounds as well as group site reservations at Lakeview Campground.
Recreation - The most popular activities around Twin Lakes include fishing, boating, picnicking, hiking, camping and simply viewing scenery. Numerous trails, including one of the routes up Mount Elbert, begin near Twin Lakes. Climate - Turquoise Lake sits at around 10,000 feet elevation so therefore experiences cold winters and cool summers. Although summer days can reach 80 degrees, the nights frequently dip into the 30's or cooler. Afternoon thunderstorms are common from mid-June through mid-September. Sunny days are common all winter but temperatures can be very cold and heavy snow is possible. Location -
Twin Lakes is located southwest of Leadville and northwest of Buena Vista, along Colorado Highway 82, east of Independence Pass. From Leadville, travel south on US Highway 24 to Highway 82, then go east two miles to the lake. From Buena Vista, go north on Highway 24 to Highway 82, then east to the lake.
