Description - Only an hour from Pueblo, the forty-acre Lake Isabel Reservoir provides a
pleasant mountain setting for fishing, hiking, picnicking, camping or group gatherings. Historical research, photos and stories available at the cabin are made possible in part through a grant from the Colorado Historical Society.
Attractions
- Most activities are accessible to the physically challenged. This area is located in the Wet Mountains which offer outstanding scenery.
Recreation - La Vista, St. Charles and South side Campgrounds are family campgrounds. Spruce and Ponderosa Group Campgrounds are available for large groups to use for camping and picnicking. Cisneros Trailhead is located within the recreation area. Most of these trails are motorized. Climate - Mountainous terrain influences the climate visitors find around Lake Isabel. In general, the summertime climate is generally mild with daily average temperatures ranging from highs of 60-95 degrees, to lows of 30-60 degrees. The days are generally clear and sunny in the mornings, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Snow showers may occur at higher elevations at any time. Generally, heavy frosts begin in late October and continue to April. The traditional beginning of the summer season in late May is often marked by wet snows, thunderstorms with small hail and cool nights. At elevations above 9,500 feet, depending on snowfall and the orientation of the site, snow drifts can linger in some areas into early July. Location -
Lake Isabel Recreation Area is approximately 30 air miles southwest of Pueblo, off of Highway 165. The main access to this area is Interstate 25 south. From Pueblo drive south for 25 miles to State Highway 165. Travel west on Highway 165, past Rye, for approximately 15 miles to the Lake Isabel Recreation Area. From Westcliffe, take Highway 96 to McKenzie Junction. Turn right and go 16 1/2 miles, past Bishops Castle to the entrance.
