Description
- The Highway of Legends leaves Walsenburg and passes Lathrop State Park on Highway 160. The route continues southward on Highway 12 toward La Veta. The byway provides beautiful views of the Spanish Peaks as it leads southward through the San Isabel National Forest. The Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range lies to the west of the byway. Highway 12 crosses Cucharas Pass (9,941 feet) and passes North Lake and Monument Park , before making a sharp turn eastward toward Trinidad. Following the Purgatoire River Highway 12 leads through the Picketwire Valley to Trinidad Lake. The total mileage for the Highway of Legends is 82 miles.
Recreation - Recreation opportunities from this byway abound. The most obvious is scenic driving. In addition boating, fishing, camping, hiking, mountain biking, road biking and horseback riding opportunities are accessible at many state and federally run sites along the route. Climate - Climate conditions in Colorado should be taken seriously throughout the state. Snow and ice are common on roads and trails from mid-October through late April. In the summer months snow is still possible but less common. Varying conditions throughout a given day can be expected throughout the year. Remember that summer days can typically have beautiful sunny mornings and short sudden thunderstorms in the afternoon. Please prepare appropriately for your outdoor experience. Location -
The Highway of Legends links Walsenburg and Trinidad via Highway 12. Both cities lie along Interstate 25 in the southeastern corner of the State. The Scenic Byway follows the Cucharas River north of the pass then leads into the Purgatory River Valley.
