Description
- The Twin Lakes area offers amazing scenery in a remote setting (especially in winter). The town lies north of two lakes that have been enlarged and incorporated into the Fryingpan-Arkansas Project, that provides water to Colorado's front range. A visitors' center on the northern shore of the lake provides information about the area and the project.Interlaken and the Twin Lakes Historical Site provide visitors with information about the community during its mining era. Interlaken is a reminder of the days when Twin Lakes was visited as a resort community. The historical site provides information about the town's days as a transportation center.
Recreation - The Twin Lakes Recreation Area encompasses several campgrounds and picnic grounds, fishing sites, boat ramps and trailheads. In addition the surrounding mountains provide opportunities for hiking, biking, backpacking, horseback riding and four-wheel driving. The Twin Lakes area is highly developed by the Forest Service. The terrain in the area challenges beginners as well as experts in many activities. Climate - Twin Lakes lie at an elevation of 9,280 feet. The town is nestled into the high peaks of the central Rockies. The weather changes quickly and sometimes dramatically in this location. Summer can be scorching due to the elevation, which provides less filtering of UV rays from the sun. If the clouds build up behind the divide the higher elevations can experience any type of precipitation on a summer day - including snow. Temperatures can drop quickly so layering is always important. During late summer expect afternoon showers or hail around noon. Winter is usually very brisk, with night time temperatures reaching the negatives. The elevation makes the days warm, and in the spring short sleeve clothing is appropriate for aerobic activities. Always bring layers in case of clouds, which can cool a sunny afternoon quickly. Don't forget the sunscreen its important when you're so close to the sun. Location -
Twin Lakes lies in the central Rocky Mountains 12 miles south of Leadville. Highway 82 leads through town on its way to Aspen. During the summer months visitors may reach Twin Lakes from the east and west on 82. In the winter Independence Pass is closed to vehicular traffic, therefore visitors to Twin Lakes must come via Highway 24.
