Description - The Hunter-Fryingpan Wilderness comprises 82,729 acres in the White River National Forest in central Colorado.This area was designated wilderness in the Endangered American Wilderness Act of 1978. It is named for the headwaters of the Fryingpan River and Hunter Creek, tributaries of the Roaring Fork River. Gold medal status for these rivers has resulted in catch restrictions to protect the large trout. Dark forests of pine and ragged peaks of the Williams Mountains dominate the landscape. Surrounded by the Collegiate and Holy Cross Wilderness Areas, which are dominated by fourteeners, the Hunter-Fryingpan Wilderness offers outstanding opportunities for solitude, one of the things wilderness was established for.

Recreation - Recreation opportunities in the Hunter-Fryingpan Wilderness include hiking, backpacking, mountain climbing, fishing and horseback riding. Mechanized and motorized vehicles are not permitted within any wilderness area. The following U.S.G.S. Quad (7 1/2 minute series) maps cover different portions of the Hunter-Fryingpan Wilderness: Aspen, Independence Pass, Meredith, Mount Champion, Nast, New York Peak, Thimble Rock. They can be purchased at National Forest offices or outdoor recreation shops. Climate - Weather patterns change quickly in the high country. Summer weather is typically dry but afternoon thunderstorms can occur on any given day. Temperatures range from the 50-80s for highs to 20-40s for lows depending upon elevation. The Hunter-Fryingpan Wilderness comprises 82,729 acres in the White River National Forest in central Colorado. This region lies east of Aspen and north of Highway 82 along Independence Pass. The Continental Divide forms the eastern boundary of the wilderness. The region extends north to the headwaters of the Fryingpan River and the towns of Norrie and Nast.
