General Information

Big Talbot Island State Park

Big Talbot Island State Park
Description - One of only a few undeveloped barrier islands left along the Atlantic coast, this state park offers
a unique view into Florida's pre-European past. Walk down any of Big Talbot's nature trails and you may catch a glimpse of some Northeast Florida wildlife in their undisturbed habitats. The panorama of the Nassau Sound as it opens to meet the Atlantic makes the Big Talbot Bluffs a perfect setting for outdoor dining.

Attractions - Located on one of the sea islands unique to northeast Florida, Big Talbot Island State Park offers rich and diverse habitats. Canoe routes through the salt marshes, fishing and sunbathing on Nassau Sound shoreline contrast with more active pursuits along the park's historic hiking trails. This is a premier spot for those who enjoy nature study, bird-watching or nature photography.

Recreation - For fishing and boating enthusiasts Big Talbot's boat ramp is your key to bountiful fishing grounds. This recent addition to the park is a deep-water ramp with easy access to the Intracoastal Waterway, Nassau Sound or the Atlantic Ocean. There is a fee of $3 to launch a boat or $1 per person to park and fish or just enjoy the park. All of Big Talbot is a premier spot for those who enjoy nature study, bird-watching or photography.

Climate - Summers in northeastern Florida are hot and humid with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Summer temperatures average in the low 80's Fahrenheit (27 - 28 Celsius). Mild winter temperatures average below 52 degrees Fahrenheit (below 11 Celsius). Freezing temperatures are infrequent but windy conditions are common. The average precipitation for the northeast area is between 52 and 56 inches per year. Light, loose fitting clothing is recommended in spring, summer and fall. Layered clothing is recommended for winter. Biting insects are common throughout the year and are especially heavy from late April through early June.

Location - Big Talbot Island State Park is located in northeast Florida, twenty miles east of downtown Jacksonville on A1A north, immediately north of Little Talbot Island State Park.
