Teed conceived Koreshanity in the autumn of 1869 in upstate New York, when he had what was later referred to as his "Illumination." Koreshan, a utopian communal society, believe the earth to be a hollow sphere with all life, planets, moon and stars within it. Teed build a community centered on religion and vocational trades as evidenced today by the bakery, machine shops, art hall, and planetary court. Upon the death of Teed in 1908, membership began to decline until the four remaining members deeded the property to the state in 1961.
