Description - Just southeast of Fort Myers, Dr. Cyrus Reed Teed began his religious sect in 1893. Teed conceived Koreshanity in the autumn of 1869 in upstate New York, when he had what was later referred to as his "Illumination." Koreshan, a utopian communal society, believe the earth to be a hollow sphere with all life, planets, moon and stars within it. Teed build a community centered on religion and vocational trades as evidenced today by the bakery, machine shops, art hall, and planetary court. Upon the death of Teed in 1908, membership began to decline until the four remaining members deeded the property to the state in 1961.
Attractions
- Koreshan State Historic Site is an interesting park highlighting one of many utopian community societies that existed around the turn-of-the 20th century. Once the state obtained deed, the Florida Parks System built a campground, picnic area, nature trails and boat launch. A highlight of the park is the 7-mile Estero River Canoe Trail. In addition, special events are held throughout the year. One of the best-attended events is the popular Florida Flywheelers weekend held each spring. Antique engine demonstration go on all weekend.
Recreation - Fishing, camping, nature study, picnicking and boating are popular activities. Canoe rentals are available. Park rangers offer guided walks and campfire programs according to seasonal demand. Climate - The climate in southern Florida is subtropical, with mild winters and hot, wet summers. It is not unusual for temperatures to exceed 90 degrees Fahrenheit with averages reaching above 83 degrees Fahrenheit (above 29 Celsius). Winters are mild and dry with temperatures averaging above 64 degrees Fahrenheit (above 18 Celsius). Yearly precipitation for the southwest area is more than 56 inches. Lightweight clothing for hot temperatures is suggested. Long sleeves, pants, sturdy shoes and bug repellent are recommended if hiking. Location -
Koreshan State Historic Site is located on U.S. 41 at Corkscrew Road, two miles west of Interstate 75, exit 19.
