Description - It is nestled inside the 26,000 acre Harrison Crawford State Forest, but is managed separately along with Wyandotte Caves State Recreation Area. was established in 1980 in a peaceful and secluded
setting with the 24,000-acre Harrison-Crawford State
Forest. It was operated by the Indiana DNR’s Division
of Forestry. This state forest, one of Indiana’s largest,
serves as a source of timber and a place for hiking,
hunting, fishing, birding and other outdoor recreation
pursuits.
Attractions
- Wyandotte Caves
is operated as a part of the state park, and tours are
available seasonally. Guests can enjoy a wide range
of activities and facilities as described in an adjacent
column of this brochure. Hunting, in compliance with
established seasons, will continue in Harrison Crawford
State Forest, but not inside O’Bannon Woods
State Park. This combination of a state park surrounded by a
vast, working state forest provides a unique opportunity
for viewing “multiple use” management of natural
and cultural resources. Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy
the wild diversity, long history and rugged beauty of
southern Indiana at O’Bannon Woods State Park.
Recreation - Visitors to the park can enjoy canoeing, camping, fishing, hiking, horse trails, interpretive programs, picnicking, and a nature center. There are also the Wyandotte Caves to explore. Call (812) 365-2705 for information. Climate - Visitors to this state can expect hot and humid summer days that often reach 90 degrees F in July and August. Summer nights bring little relief with an average temperature of 70. Winter can be extremely cold in this Midwestern state with a yearly average of 40 inches of snow and low temperatures dipping to negative 15 degrees F. Winter daytime highs average close to 40 degrees. Spring and fall are excellent times to visit Indiana spring brings blooming wildflowers and daytime highs of 65 degrees F. With falls mild temperatures the leaves in the forested southern regions of the state change to brilliant hues. Location -
The O'Bannon Woods State Park is located in the southern most part of the state, bordering the Ohio river. The entrance to the park is located off of hwy 462.
