Description - This gorgeous area of the state is known as a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. From whitewater boating to skiing, fishing and hunting, people enjoy the endless recreational opportunities afforded at places like White Mountain National Forest, Range Ponds State Park, Rangeley Lake State Park, Sebago Lake State Park, Mount Blue State Park and more.

Attractions - This gorgeous area of the state includes the fabulous and often times challenging White Mountain National Forest. Deep forested trails, secluded fishing ponds and primitive campgrounds offer the traveler a wonderful wilderness experience. Several state parks in the territory including Range Pond, Rangeley Lake, Sebago and Mount Blue offer clean, quiet and restful experiences underneath a canopy of evergreen. Picnicking, hiking, fishing and camping are enjoyed during the warmer months while cross-country skiing and ice fishing are enjoyed in the colder months.

Recreation - White Mountain National Forest is probably the largest attraction in this area in addition to the Rangeley Lake area. White Mountain offers unsurpassed wilderness beauty while the Rangeley area offers some of the most exciting fishing opportunities in the state. Downhill skiing, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling are very popular winter sports throughout the whole territory.

Climate - The Western Maine Mountains Region, known for its spectacular four seasons, sees average daytime winter temperatures ranging 10 - 14 degrees Fahrenheit (-12 to -10 Celsius) in the northern area and an average of 14 -18 degrees Fahrenheit (-10 to -8 Celsius) in the southern area. Summer unfolds for outdoors enthusiasts with temperatures in the northern area averaging 66 degrees Fahrenheit (19 Celsius) and in the southern area averaging 68 (20 Celsius). Western Maine Mountains Region experiences a wide range of precipitation. From north to south, the area receives an average of less than 38 inches (97 centimeters) to more than 44 inches of precipitation each year. Summer rainfall averages 3 - 5 inches per month.

Location - The Western Maine Mountains Region falls along the New Hampshire and Canadian borders. White Mountains National Forest extends into this area from New Hampshire. The southern area is bordered by Southern Maine Region, one of the most populous areas of the state.
