General Information

Description - Located in Aroostook County, Telos Public Reserved Land surrounds Tells Lake and the southern end of Chamberlain Lake, which is located off private roadways northwest of Baxter State Park. The area is well known for attracting anglers and picnickers.

Attractions - Telos Public Reserved Land is a 23,000-acre unit that surrounds Tells Lake and the southern end of Chamberlain Lake, which is located off private roadways northwest of Baxter State Park. This public land serves as the most popular starting point for canoeists traveling the Allagash Wilderness Waterway. The public land is accessible year-round.

Recreation - Simple recreation is offered at Telos Public Reserved Land including canoeing, fishing and picnicking. In winter, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling are enjoyed. Optimum viewing opportunities of plant life and wildlife await the visitor. A campsite is located on Coffelos Pond, which is popular with anglers. The State of Maine is a member of North Maine Woods, an organization that manages recreation on nearly three million acres in northern Maine. Day use and camping fees collected at various checkpoints defray the costs of managing public access and maintaining recreation facilities. North Maine Woods can be contacted at (207) 435-6213. Hunting and trapping are allowed, subject to state rules and regulations.

Climate - Katahdin / Moosehead / Penquis Region has daytime winter temperatures in the northern area averaging 10 - 14 degrees Fahrenheit (-12 to -10 Celsius). In the southern area, winter temperatures average 14 - 18 degrees Fahrenheit (-10 to -8 Celsius). Summer brings cool, pleasant breezes with temperatures in the northern area averaging 66 degrees Fahrenheit (19 Celsius) and in the southern area averaging around 68 degrees Fahrenheit (20 Celsius). The region receives an average of 38 - 44 inches (97 - 112 centimeters) of precipitation each year.
