Mississippi Lakes and Reservoirs

Attractions - The lakes and reservoirs listed here range from huge reservoirs covering over 60,000 acres, to small lakes tucked away in the Mississippi back woods. Included in this list are many of the state parks and water parks situated on lakes and reservoirs. Most of the lakes have beaches, boat ramps, campgrounds, picnic areas and trails. Many even have cabins. Some offer lodges, group pavilions and water slides.

Recreation - Because of Mississippi's mild climate, many of the recreation opportunities at these lakes and reservoirs are enjoyable year-round. The most popular activities include fishing, water skiing, boating, and canoeing. Other opportunities available adjacent to many of the lakes include camping, picnicking, and hiking. Some of the lakes, especially the ones with associated state parks or water parks, offer cabin stays and even water slides.

Climate - Mississippi lies mainly in the subtropics. The climate is mild with the coldest months experiencing low temperatures near 40 degrees F. Summer temperatures frequently reach 100 degrees F, with coastal breezes providing cooling relief. Humidity is highest in August and September reaching an average close to 90%. The highest rainfall comes during the spring months, but December and January are wet, too. Expect temperatures in the northeastern region to be somewhat cooler than the rest of the state.

Location - Mississippi's Lakes and Reservoirs are scattered throughout the state. Many of the largest reservoirs are found in the Hills Region of northeast Mississippi. The Pat Harrison Water Parks are located in southeast Mississippi, in the Pines and Coastal Regions.
