Lake Waccamaw State Park

Description
- Discover one-of-a-kind aquatic animals found nowhere else on earth. The lake is home to the Lake Waccamaw killifish and a number of other unique fish and mollusks. Spend an evening in the primitive campground or enjoy a picnic under stately trees dripping with Spanish moss. Park Hours: November-February 8 am-6 pm; March, October 8 am - 7 pm; April, May, September 8 am - 8 pm; June-August 8 am - 9 pm. Office hours: 8 am-5 pm Monday through Friday. Gates will remain locked, except in emergency situations, when the park is not in operation. Please plan accordingly. The park is closed Christmas Day.
Recreation - There is one hike, Sand Ridge Nature Trail which is an easy 0.75 mile trail through the park. It offers an excellent look at the vegetation of the sandrim of a Carolina Bay. An interpretive brochure is available at the trail entrance. There are 24 tables located at the picnic area with ten grills. There are three primitive group campsites available with tables, fire circle and pit toilets. These sites are available to organized groups only (maximum of 20 persons). Lake / stream fishing is popular at Lake Waccamaw for white perch, bass and bream. All regulations of the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission are enforced. Boating and sailing are permitted on the lake. Two access areas on the lakeshore provide free boat ramps. One is operated by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and the other is operated by Columbus County.
Educational hikes or lectures may be arranged in advance with the park staff. Please contact the park office for arrangements.
Environmental Educational Learning Experience (EELE)--Lake Waccamaw. One of a Kind-Grades 6, 7, and 8. Introduces students to the unique ecosystem of this particular Carolina bay, focusing on the water chemistry and its diversity of aquatic life, particularly fish, mussels and snails. Major concepts covered include: water chemistry, aquatic life, water quality, diversity of life and stewardship.
Accessible facilities include: parking, pathways, picnic tables, restrooms, the fishing pier, boardwalk and visitor center. Climate - Winter daytime temperatures average above 44 degrees Fahrenheit (above 7 Celsius). Summer daytime temperatures average above 80 degrees Fahrenheit (above 27 Celsius). The state has a fairly wet climate with an average precipitation for this area averaging 48-52 inches (122-132 centimeters). Location -
Lake Waccamaw State Park is located in Columbus County, 38 miles west of Wilmington and 12 miles east of Whiteville. The park is located on Martin Road off SR 1947. Look for signs on US 74/76 and NC 214.
