Mount Jefferson State Park

Description
- The 541-acre state park is home to the Mount Jefferson Summit, towering approximately 5,000 feet. On clear days, Virginia's highest peak, Mount Rogers, 5,729 feet is visible. Views of a working community lie below. This park boosts of its diverse vegetation which is why the forest earned the designation as a National Natural Landmark. Park Hours: November-February 9 am-5 pm; March, October 9 am -6 pm; April, May, September 9 am - 7 pm; June-August 9 am - 8 pm. Office hours: 8 am-12 pm Monday through Friday. The park is closed Christmas Day.
Recreation - The park has nice wide roads offering two magnificent overlooks. Two short scenic trails give hikers a spectacular view of the New River and the surrounding mountain peaks. There is a picnic area near the summit parking lot providing 19 tables and 7 grills. One picnic shelter is available and reservations are optional. The shelter has 6 tables, grill and beautiful large fireplace. There are no overnight facilities or water recreation at this park. Mount Jefferson has a self-guided nature trail for hikers to take their time learning about the natural history of the area. By special request, the park naturalists will lead a guided walk explaining the area's natural history and legends. Program history is available which advertises upcoming hikes and events. Environmental Educational Learning Experience (EELE)--Metamorphic Mountain-Grades 5, 6, and 7. Introduces students to the geology of the region, focusing on the geologic processes and rocks and minerals of Mount Jefferson. Major concepts covered include: the rock cycle, weathering and erosion, rock and mineral identification, geologic history and resource use. A parking space, water fountain and a paved path to the picnic area are wheelchair accessible. Climate - Winter daytime temperatures average below 36 degrees Fahrenheit (below 2 Celsius). Summer daytime temperatures average below 76 degrees Fahrenheit (below 24 Celsius). The state has a fairly wet climate with an average precipitation for this area averaging 44 to 48 inches (112 to 122 centimeters). Location -
