- Nevada currently offers one All-American Road, the Las Vegas Strip, two National Scenic byways, Lake Tahoe Eastshore Drive and Pyramid Lake Scenic Drive, and eight state designated byways.The Las Vegas Strip is a truly unique byway. It is the only scenic route that is more scenic at night than during the day. Every few hundred feet offers a different experience, from Egyptian pyramids to medieval castles to Roman empires. The Lake Tahoe Eastshore Drive skirts the edges of Lake Tahoe, providing visitors with breathtaking views of the Lake Tahoe Basin. As the only byway in the nation entirely within a tribal reservation, Pyramid Lake Scenic Byway takes visitors around one of the largest desert lakes in the world and provides a unique opportunity to interact with the Paiute tribe. These are just a few highlights of the byways in this diverse state.
Recreation - Byways provide access to numerous cultural, historical, natural, recreational and scenic sites. Some of the most popular activities along the byways include hiking, camping, picnicking, biking, fishing, photographing scenery, viewing historic sites and of course scenic driving. Climate - Nevada is characterized by the high desert Great Basin in the northern portion of the state, the low desert in the southern portion of the state and mountain ranges which bisect these desert areas. These elevational differences can create wide ranging climatic differences. In the low deserts of southern Nevada, including the area around Las Vegas, temperatures during the summer months often reach 115 degrees F. Winters are mild with cool nights. Winter, spring and fall are a pleasant time to visit this region. Because the Great Basin lies at a higher elevation, the area receives cold winter weather with snow that can remain for months. Seven inches of rain falls in the region annually, although run off from the surrounding mountains contributes to the water availability. The mountains receive significantly colder temperatures and precipitation year round. They can be great areas for winter recreation or an escape from the summer heat of the lower elevations.
