Description - Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada mountains are the dominant features of this region. It is a region of mountain lakes, forests of pine and fir, snow-covered mountains, an ancient sea turned into a desert lake, and historic mining town. The cities of Reno, Sparks, and Carson City are all found in this area.

- At the north end of the territory is the Black Rock Desert, a vast area of limitless vistas and stark beauty. South of Black Rock is Pyramid Lake, a remnant of a prehistoric inland sea that once covered much of Nevada. The lake is ringed by intriguing tufa rock formations and offers fishing and boating. South of Pyramid Lake are Northern Nevada's largest cities, Reno and Sparks. West of Carson City via U.S. Hwy. 50 is the gem of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, Lake Tahoe. This picturesque lake is one of the clearest and deepest lakes in the world. Along the northeast shore of Lake Tahoe, visitors will find Lake Tahoe State Park, with a wide range of recreation opportunities. Other popular attractions in the area include Mormon Station State Park, Dayton State Park, Lahontan Reservoir and State Park, and Washoe Lake State Park. The Sierra Nevadas are a huge attraction to this region. Most of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in this region lie within the Toiyabe National Forest.
Recreation - There are numerous and varied recreational opportunities available throughout the Reno-Tahoe Region. Some of the most popular include hiking, backpacking, camping, fishing, mountain biking, downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, snowboarding, water skiing, boating, viewing historic sites, viewing scenery, and scenic driving. Climate - Climate in this region varies greatly with elevation. Summer high temperatures can reach into the 90's in Reno and the low elevations, but are substantially cooler at Lake Tahoe and the higher elevations. Nighttime lows in the summer can dip into the 30's in the mountains. Winter brings heavy snow to the mountains and cold temperatures to even the lower elevations. The low elevations do not tend to hold substantial amounts of snow through the winter. Visitors to the site should dress according to the variations in temperatures. Location -
The Reno-Tahoe Region is located in northwest Nevada and borders both Oregon and California. The region surrounds Lake Tahoe and the cities of Reno, Sparks and Carson City.
