Description - There aren't many places left in the United States where you'll find real pioneers in a true frontier setting. The state's Pioneer Territory in south central Nevada is one of the last. There are a variety of natural wonders here, from the eerie badlands of Death Valley National Park to the alpine grandeur of the Toiyabe and Monitor mountain ranges. The land is dotted with the ruins of old mining towns that flourished and floundered in the boom-bust cycle of that risky industry. However, family ranches that have been operating for 100 years or more still survive as bastions of traditional western ranch life.
Attractions
- Pioneer Territory's wide-open spaces and uncrowded mountain ranges offer plenty of recreational options. The regions includes large portions of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. Walker Lake State Recreation Area lies at the west end of the region. It also includes numerous State Parks. There are five State Parks located at the eastern end of the region: Spring Valley, Echo Canyon, Cathedral Gorge, Kershaw-Ryan, and Beaver Dam. These all offer scenic and recreational opportunities. Berlin Ichthyosaur and Belmont Courthouse State Historic Site offer opportunities to get glimpses of past life and mining activities in this historic mining region.
Recreation - In recent years, mountain biking has become a popular pastime in the Toiyabe and Toquima ranges of Central Nevada. Other popular activities in the region include hiking, backpacking, camping, fishing, boating, horseback riding, mountain biking, hunting, and viewing the historic towns and sites. Climate - Climate in this vast region varies with elevation. The lowest elevations experience typical low desert conditions where winters are mild with temperatures ranging from freezing to 75 degrees. Daily summer highs often exceed 100 degrees and may reach 120 degrees. Much of this region lies at higher elevations. The higher elevations experience much cooler temperatures year-round and frequent snow in the winter. Summertime highs range in the upper 80's and 90's and lows can dip into the 40's and 50's. Winter temperatures at the high elevations can dip below zero Fahrenheit. Location -
As the title suggests, the region is located within south-central Nevada. It includes the towns of Hawthorne, Amargosa Valley, Tonopah and Panaca. Highways 93, 95 and 6 access the area.
