Description - Located in the southwestern area of the Adirondacks Forest Preserve surrounded by Herkimer, Fulton, Warren, Essex, Franklin and St. Lawrence Counties, it encompasses 1,000,000 acres of unbroken wilderness. Hamilton County boasts 262 lakes and ponds in addition to 500 miles of groomed cross-country trails. Larger than Yellowstone and Yosemite combined, this county offers 737,000 acres of public recreation land and another 22,500 acres of private in-holdings accessible by permit. As imagined, a variety of outdoor recreations are enjoyed ranging from big game hunting to long distance hiking to world-class fishing.

The area encompasses 1,000,000 acres of unbroken wilderness featuring 262 lakes and ponds, 500 miles of uninterrupted snowmobile trails, 737,000 acres of public recreation land including 15 different public family campgrounds, several "wilderness" designated areas and a large recreation area. Wildlife thrives amid the forested mountain ridges and peaks. Visitors will likely see black bear, white-tailed deer, bobcat, red and gray fox, fisher, wild turkey, ruffed grouse, beaver, mink, otter, a variety of waterfowl, numerous songbirds and even the American bald eagle. Moose and snowshoe hare are known to inhabit the area as well. In addition, there is an Adirondack Museum, several golf courses, seaplane tours and charters, licensed guides, downhill skiing resorts, horse rentals and whitewater rafting excursions. Featured waters include the Sacandaga Lake, West Canada Creek, Moose River, Black River, Oswegatchie River and Raquette River, many of which are stocked with brook trout.
Recreation - Larger than Yellowstone and Yosemite combined, the Hamilton County region of the Adirondack Forest Preserve is a world-renowned wilderness destination. Recreations abound including canoeing, big and small game hunting, backcountry traveling, primitive camping, picnicking, mountain biking, four-wheel driving excursions, trapping, horseback riding, and of course, viewing vast species of wildlife all the while amid unsurpassed natural scenery. Climate - The Adirondacks has a varied climate with average January temperatures from below 14 degrees reaching to 18 Fahrenheit (below -10 to -8 degrees Celsius). Summer temperatures average around 68 degrees Fahrenheit (20 degrees Celsius). There are fewer than 100 days of frost-free growing season in the Adirondacks.
