John Burroughs Memorial State Historic Site

Description - Located 1.5 miles west of SR 30, north of Roxbury, rests John Burroughs, the widely recognized American writer on outdoor life. A friend and traveling companion to Theodore Roosevelt, Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, Burroughs is remembered for great essays including "Bird Enemies," "The Tragedies of the Nests," "A Taste of Maine Birch" "The Breath of Life," and many more. The memorialized site is open year-round, dawn to dusk.

And so echo the words of John Burroughs (1837-1921), one of the country's great nature writers. The last resting place of this famous literary naturalist overlooks a quiet field surrounded by magnificent views of the Catskill Mountains where he made his home and was first inspired by the unspoiled beauties of the woods, fields and mountains. Traveling companions included such greats as Theodore Roosevelt, Thomas Edison and Henry Ford.
Recreation - The memorialized site of the legendary writer, John Burroughs offers hiking trails, scenic views, a picnic area, self-guided tours featuring interpretive signage. The grounds are open year-round from dawn until dusk. Climate - This state memorial experiences average January temperatures from 18 degrees to above 22 degrees Fahrenheit (-8 to above -6 degrees Celsius). It is important to note that this area receives some of the heaviest snowfalls in the nation. Summer temperatures average around 72 degrees Fahrenheit (around 22 degrees Celsius). Precipitation in the region ranges from 36 inches to more than 44 inches of rain and snowmelt. The heaviest precipitation is received in the region's northeast segment. Location -
