Description - Recreation on this 233-acre reservoir includes boating, camping, fishing, hunting, picnicking and water sports. Available species include largemouth bass, crappie, rainbow trout, kokanee, brown trout, and brown bullhead. Haystack Reservoir is an irrigation storage facility for North Unit Irrigation District and is fed primarily by an offshoot canal originating from the Crooked River and by three runoff streams. It was named after a butte to the south, the dam was constructed in 1956-1957 which is earth filed. The terrain-surrounding Haystack is plain, consisting of sage and irrigated pastureland that is typical of high desert landscape.

Available species include largemouth bass, crappie, rainbow trout, kokanee, brown trout, and brown bullhead. The fishing is sometimes slow but with the warmer weather and the magnificent view of Mt. Jefferson it can make the trip worthwhile. Haystack is open year round for fishing but check with the ODFW for any unusual regulations. It often freezes over in the winter, the ice is usually very thin due to the lower elevation of the lake and consequently the ice fishing is poor but with ice-out a viable fishery emerges.
Recreation - Haystack Campground is a scenic high desert campground, located on the shore of the reservoir and is surrounded by red rimrock. The campground features 24 family sites, with very modern flush toilets and paved camp spurs. Climate - The climate in Oregon varies greatly by region. The coastal region and the regions west of the Cascade Range are generally temperate and wet. Temperatures in the western portion of the state rarely rise above 85 degrees F during the warmest months and rarely dip below freezing during the winter.

Haystack Reservoir is about 3 miles from the city of Culver and is 45 minutes from Bend. The reservoir is located 10 miles south of Madras, east off U.S. 97.
