Keystone State Park
Description - Keystone State Park is a multi-use park offering overnight facilities and year-round recreation opportunities. The park consists of 1,200 acres in Derry Township, Westmoreland County and boasts of a 78-acre lake constructed by the Keystone Coal and Coke Company in the early 1900's.

Keystone State Park opened in 1945 hosting a wide range of both plant and animal life. The visitor center offers a bird checklist and other environmental materials. There are 100 tent and RV sites open from early spring to mid fall. There are modern cabins, boating opportunities on the lake, swimming in the lake and picnicking along side the lake. The park has several multi-use trails which are available during the cold winter months for cross-country skiing. Ice fishing and ice skating are also popular during the winter season. Approximately half of Keystone State Park is open to hunting, trapping and the training of dogs during established seasons. Common game species are deer, turkey, squirrel, pheasant and grouse. Environmental education programs are offered year-round.

Forbes State Forest which has over 50,000 acres, is located nearby offering year-round hunting, multi-use trails, fishing and winter sports.

The coal company purchased the land from the McClelland Family in 1909 and the original farmhouse remains in use today.

Keystone State Park opened in 1945 hosting a wide range of both plant and animal life. These natural attractions offer an exciting adventure for the visitor willing to sit, watch and listen for these hidden wonders. The marsh area is a great place to view beaver, waterfowl and other wetland species. The visitor center offers a bird checklist and other environmental materials.

Recreation - Keystone State Park has wonderful recreation opportunities. There are 100 tent and RV sites open from early spring to mid fall. There are modern cabins, boating opportunities on the lake, swimming in the lake and picnicking along side the lake. The park has several multi-use trails which are available during the cold winter months for cross-country skiing. Ice fishing and ice skating are also popular during the winter season.

Approximately half of Keystone State Park is open to hunting, trapping and the training of dogs during established seasons. Common game species are deer, turkey, squirrel, pheasant and grouse. Hunting on the lake and surrounding area is prohibited. Hunting woodchucks, also known as groundhogs, is prohibited. Dog training is only permitted from the day following Labor Day to March 31 in designated hunting areas. The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and the Pennsylvania Game Commission rules and regulations apply.

Environmental education programs are offered year-round. For a schedule of activities or to request a special program, call 724-668-2566. A visitor center located in the campground offers an introduction to the history, flora and fauna of the park.

Cabin # 11 and a fishing area by the spillway are fully accessible.

Climate - Pennsylvania generally has a moist climate with cold winters and warm summers. The Keystone State Park area has cold winter months with temperatures averaging around 24 to 28 degrees Fahrenheit (-4 to -2 degrees Celsius). The area's average summer temperatures range around 68 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit (20 to 22 Celsius).

Location - Located on SR 1018, the park is three miles from the SR 981/SR 22 intersection in New Alexandria and five miles from Latrobe.
