Description
- All three byways in South Carolina, Ashley River Road, Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway and Savannah River Scenic Byway, are designated National Scenic Byways. The Ashley River Road encapsulates the history of the American South and the culture of South Carolina's low country. Following an ancient Cherokee path, Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway makes a 130-mile arc through peach orchards and villages, travels past Cowpens Battlefield and several state parks, and journeys over Lake Keowee. The Savannah River Scenic Highway provides a pleasant drive through the upland section of South Carolina, affording scenic views, glimpses of life in the rural South, and opportunities to experience a special sort of Southern hospitality.
Recreation - Byways provide access to numerous cultural, historical, natural, recreational and scenic sites. Some of the most popular activities along the byways include hiking, camping, picnicking, biking, fishing, photographing scenery, viewing historic sites and of course scenic driving. Climate - South Carolina has a mild climate that remains warm throughout the year. Humidity is a major factor in the summer months as the temperatures rise to 95 degrees F. July is the hottest time of the year, during which Columbia has an average high temperature of 92 degrees. The coastal and mountain towns average slightly lower temperatures. During the winter months temperatures dip into the 40s, but rarely remain there for long. Average January temperatures throughout the state range from 50 to 60 degrees F. Snow rarely falls, and if it does it doesn't remain for long. Most of the precipitation comes to the region during July in summer thundershowers. Location -
