Baker Creek State Park
Description - The park is located in the heart of the Sumter National Forest on the shore of Strom Thurmond Lake (formerly Clarks Hill Lake). This impoundment of the Savannah River separates South Carolina and Georgia, and is one of the largest lakes in the Southeast. Thurmond Lake's 70,000 acres of fresh water has more than 1,200 miles of shoreline. Situated in a heavily wooded area with rolling terrain, this 1,305-acre park is popular with campers, fishermen and day visitors.

The park includes 100 camping sites that include, restrooms, and hot showers. Thirty sites are waterfront and no site is farther than 40 yards from the lake. Trails include: a moderate 1 mile loop hiking trail, and a 1 mile one-way trail. Enjoy fishing in Strom Thurmond Lake for several species of bass, crappie, catfish, bream and striper. Two boat ramps provide boat access to Strom Thurmond Lake.

Recreation - Baker Creek State Park offers many recreation opportunities. The most popular activities include camping, fishing, picnicking, boating, and hiking. Also provided are picnic shelters, playground equipment, horse shoes, and basketball and volleyball courts.

Climate - South Carolina generally has a temperate climate, with cool winters and warm, humid summers. Snow and freezing temperatures are possible in the winter at the higher elevations. Thunderstorms are possible throughout the year but most common in the spring and summer. Tropical storms occasionally strike the coast during the hurricane season.

Location - Baker Creek State Park is located in west-central South Carolina, near the Georgia border. From McCormick, take US 378 west for 4 miles, take a right at the park sign, go 1 mile then take a left at the park entrance.
