Kayaking at Colleton State Park
Description - Only five minutes from I-95, this 35-acre park is a popular stopover for interstate travelers. Campers, fishermen and canoeists all enjoy the peaceful and relaxing waters of the Edisto River, with its diversity of wildlife. Colleton State Park is on a portion of the river that has been designated as an official canoe and kayak trail which carries paddlers into a rare, natural world of wildlife and scenic beauty. The canoe trail between Colleton and Givhans Ferry is 23 miles by river - 7 to 9 hours depending on current and paddling skills.

The camping area offers 25 campsites on the Edisto River. Each campsite is rented on a first-come, first-served basis, except for 2 sites which may be reserved exclusively for the handicapped. 13 sites accommodate RV's up to 40 ft. Enjoy fishing in the Edisto River for bream, redbreast, catfish. River access for private boats is 1/4 mile from the park. Picnic shelters are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Recreation - Colleton State Park offers opportunities for kayaking, canoeing, camping, picnicking, and fishing.

Climate - South Carolina generally has a temperate climate, with cool winters and warm, humid summers. Snow and freezing temperatures are possible in the winter at the higher elevations. Thunderstorms are possible throughout the year but most common in the spring and summer. Tropical storms occasionally strike the coast during the hurricane season.

Location - Colleton State Park is located in southern South Carolina, just north of the town of Walterboro, off Interstate 95. From I-95, take exit #68 onto SC Highway 61 towards Canadys. Go 3 miles to a stop sign at the intersection of US Highway 15 and SC Highway 61. Take a left at the intersection onto US15 and the park entrance will be half a mile on the left.
