- South Carolina's northwest corner serves as a gateway to the mountains. This is an area of high plateaus and mountains, with elevations reaching over 3,500 feet. The Midlands region of South Carolina incorporates the southern most Piedmont area, between the Appalachian Mountains to the west and the Atlantic coastal plain to the east. The Low-country Region includes the Atlantic coast and the coastal plain.
Recreation - South Carolina offers a myriad of outdoor recreation activities. The activities range from ocean and and water based, to mountain oriented. Some of the most popular activities include camping, fishing, swimming, hiking, boating, picnicking, canoeing, horseback riding, viewing wildlife and viewing scenery, but many more activities are offered. Climate - South Carolina generally has a temperate climate, with cool winters and warm, humid summers. Snow and freezing temperatures are possible in the winter at the higher elevations. The Upstate Region of South Carolina is located in the northwest corner of the state. It includes the cities of Greenville and Spartanburg. The Midlands Region of South Carolina includes the middle portion of the state, between the Upcountry to the northwest and the Low country to the southeast. The Midlands includes the capital city of Columbia. The Low country Region of South Carolina includes the Atlantic coast and the coastal plain. It covers the area south and east from Sumter. The region includes Charleston, Hilton Head Island, and Myrtle Beach.
