Rose Hill Plantation State Historic Site
Description - The outstanding feature of this 44-acre park is the former home of South Carolina's "Secession Governor" William H. Gist. This early 19th century Federal-style house has been restored and contains furnishings once owned by the Gist family. An outstanding hardwood grove is located near the mansion and the spacious grounds include the rose gardens and original plantation buildings. The surrounding Sumter National Forest and nearby Tyger River offer a variety of outdoor activities. This site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Tours of the historic home are available. Contact the site for exact times and further information. The site offers an easy 1/2 mile nature trail. There is a picnic shelter which is available on a first-come, first-served basis or can be reserved for a fee.

Recreation - Rose Hill offers opportunities for touring this historic site, walking a short nature trail and picnicking.

Climate - South Carolina generally has a temperate climate, with cool winters and warm, humid summers. Snow and freezing temperatures are possible in the winter at the higher elevations. Thunderstorms are possible throughout the year but most common in the spring and summer. Tropical storms occasionally strike the coast during the hurricane season.

Location - Rose Hill Plantation is 8 miles south of Union off US 176 on Sardis Road. The park is located on the left.
