- Tennessee is famous for its contribution to the music world but equally important is Tennessee's reputation for beautiful landscapes. From the delta plains of the Mississippi at Memphis to the soaring heights of the Cherokee National Forest around Mountain City, the state has many scenic routes worth exploring. Cherohala Skyway is designated as a National Scenic Byway and Natchez Trace Parkway is designated as an All-American Road. The Cherohala Skyway leads visitors over a gently winding pathway into the heart of historic Cherokee Indian ancestral territories. Magnificent and seldom-seen portions of the Southern Appalachian National Forests are easily accessible from the byway. Native Americans, Kaintuck boatmen, post riders, government officials, soldiers, and fortune seekers all moved across this 425-mile trail that is now the Natchez Trace Parkway, charting new territory and creating a vital link between the Mississippi Territory and the fledgling United States.

Some of the most popular activities along the byways include hiking, camping, picnicking, biking, fishing, photographing scenery, viewing historic sites and of course scenic driving.
