General Information

Description - Boca Chica State Park is 1054.92 acres, located in the Boca Chica Subdelta of the Rio Grande River, in southeastern Cameron County. The park was acquired and opened in May 1994.

Attractions - The Barnes Tract includes the Mesa de Gavilan (a flat upland about 5 feet above sea level), the south shore of South Bay, the west shore of Boca Chica Bay, and the flat, sandy, northern end of Boca Chica Island. It consists of low, shrubby, salt-tolerant vegetation with grasses and herbs interspersed. Trecul's Yuccas and Nopal Prickly Pears rise above this low vegetation on higher elevations. On Boca Chica Island, the Tract consists of low, newly-forming sand dunes with their anchoring vegetation amidst bare sand flats. Endangered and rare birds can be seen on almost every visit, including Brown Pelicans, Reddish Egrets, Roseate Spoonbills, Osprey, White-tailed Kits, Aplomado Falcons, Snowy Plovers, Least and Sooty Terns, Black Skimmers, Chihuahua Ravens, and Cassin's, Botteri's, and Seaside Sparrows. Dolphins swim in the adjacent Gulf of Mexico. South Bay remains a unique, hypersaline nursery area for many marine shellfish and finfish. The area serves as a major winter ground for endangered Peregrine Falcons and Piping Plovers. A variety of shorebirds, gulls, and terns winter in numbers.

Recreation - Activities permitted on the adjacent Del Mar and Boca Chica Beach include picnicking, wading, swimming, birding, natural history observation, camping, fishing (with a license), and surfing. All are subject to disruption by offshore storms at any season and from June through November by tropical storms and hurricanes.

Climate - Boca Chica has a warm and humid climate for most of the year

Location - To reach the park, take FM 511 east from US Highway 77/83 at Olmito for 12 miles and turn left (east) on State Highway 4. Or take Boca Chica Boulevard east from US Highway 77/83 in Brownsville for 5.4 miles to the same point. Either route, continue east about 17 mile. The park is near the east end of State Highway 4 for 22.5 miles east of Brownsville.
