Description - Fort Lancaster State Historical Park, 81.6 total acres located west of Ozona in Crockett County, was acquired April 16, 1968, by deed from Crockett County and private owners. In 1975, Henry Meadows donated 41 more acres of land, which included the sites of a sutler store, munitions dump, a historic trash dump, and one archaic Indian mound.Fort Lancaster was established August 20, 1855, to guard the San Antonio-El Paso Road and protect movement of supplies and immigrants from Indian hostilities. The Fort was abandoned March 19, 1861, after Texas seceded from The Union.
Attractions
- Much of the attraction to the site relates to its history. The park offers exhibits on history, natural history, and archaeology. There is also a nature study along a designated nature trail and picnicking. Moreover there are historic site tours and special events. Wildlife to observe and photograph include white-tailed deer, raccoons, armadillos, and squirrels. Facilities include a Texas State Park Store, historic ruins, a 1/2-mile nature trail, and an interpretive center with restrooms. The site serves for historical study activities. Nearby attractions include Devils River State Natural Area; Fort McKavett, Fort Leaton, and Seminole Canyon State Historical Parks; Big Bend Ranch State Park; and Big Bend National Park. Recreation - Recreational opportunities offered by the Fort Lancaster State Historical Park includes exhibits on history, natural history, and archaeology; nature study on a nature trail, historic ruins, picnicking and historic site tours and special events. Climate - The Fort Lancaster State Historical Park is located at an elevation of 2348 feet. Temperatures within the park range from a July average high of 97 degrees and a January average low of 32 degrees. The Fort Lancaster State Historical Park is situated within the San Angelo area of Texas. The park is located 8 miles east of Sheffield, off Interstate 10 on US Highway 290 (Scenic Loop). Take Exit #343 and follow US Highway 290 to the park.
