Description - The Gulf Coast region is a nearly level, slowly drained plain less than 150 feet in elevation, dissected by streams and rivers flowing into the Gulf of Mexico. The region includes the barrier islands lining the coast which protect the shoreline from the constant buffeting of harsher ocean waves, and the highly productive estuaries and marshes that support a thriving fishing economy.
Attractions
- This region offers some excellent recreation attractions, most of them centered around the Gulf of Mexico. One of the most popular attractions is Padre Island National Seashore. Noted for its wide sand beaches, excellent fishing and abundant bird and marine life, this barrier island stretches along the Gulf Coast for 80.5 miles. The region offers numerous state parks including Goose Island, Matagorda Penninsula, Galveston Island, Sea Rim, Lake Texana, Malaquite Beach and others. The area offers a number of historic sites, some of which include Fulton Mansion State Historic Park, Port Isabel Lighthouse State Historic Park, Sabine Pass Battleground State Historic Park and Varner-Hogg Plantation State Historic Park. The National Wildlife Refuges in the region offer additional outdoor attractions. The refuges include Anahuac, Aransas, Brazoria, Laguna Atascosa, San Bernard, Texas Point and McFaddin.
Recreation - Much of the outdoor recreation in this region is water based. Some of the most popular activities include fishing, swimming, boating, water skiing, sailing, operating personal watercraft and relaxing on the beaches. Camping, hiking, viewing scenery and viewing wildlife are other popular activities in the region. Climate - Rainfall in this region varies from 20 to 50 inches per year distributed fairly uniformly throughout the year. The growing season is usually more than 300 days, with high humidity and warm temperatures. Location -
As the name implies, this region lies along the Texas Gulf Coast, stretching from the Louisianna border south to the Mexico border. It includes the cities of Houston, Galveston, Corpus Christi, Brownsville and South Padre Island. Interstates 10 and 45 as well as U.S. Highway 77 lead through the region.
