Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge- Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge consists of over 14,000 acres, the majority of which is located on the Virginia portion of Assateague Island.
Eastern Shore Of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge- Habitat is provided at this refuge for migratory, threatened and endangered species such as the black duck, bald eagle and peregrine falcon.
Kiptopeke State Park- Kiptopeke is one of the United States' most important bird population study areas. It is located along Virginia's eastern shore, which is a major flyway for neotropical songbirds and raptors.

General Information

Description - Upon existing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, the visitor will first pass through the Eastern Shore National Wildlife Refuge. The entire area is known for views of migratory birds, raptors, Eastern box turtles, colorful butterflies, duck and herons. The Eastern Shore offers canoeing and kayaking as a popular recreation in the back waters providing a close-up view of wildlife along remote creeks and bays. The Turner Sculpture Museum and Foundry offers wonder art modeled from nature and the Decoy Factory allows visitors to observe carvers and painters first hand. In addition, the area is dotted with remote barrier islands providing a scenic and lush habitat for migrating birds.

The Coastal Virginia Wildlife Observatory volunteers capture, examine, weigh, band and release resident and migratory birds in September and October of each year. In the raptor research area, hawks, kestrels, osprey and other birds of prey are observed and banded from September through November.

Recreation - Kiptopeke State Park offers overnight camping facilities, swimming beach, bird banding stations, raptor observation deck, a lush butterfly garden and an interpretive trail. Each fall the park hosts activities associated with the Kiptopeke Birding Festival.

Climate - Virginia generally has mild winters and warm humid summers. The eastern portion of the state has winter temperatures averaging above 36 degrees Fahrenheit (2 degrees Celsius). The state's summer temperatures have little variation. The eastern portion of Virginia generally experiences temperatures above 78 degrees Fahrenheit (26 Celsius). High humidity along with warm temperatures can be uncomfortable.

Location - The Eastern Shore is located on U.S. 13 north of Virginia Beach across the 17.6 mile Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel (hefty toll).
